A cable reel, whether a spring cable reel or a motorized cable reel, is used to transmit electrical energy and communication data to moving (mobile) consumers by means of lines (cables). Thanks to their robust design, they are at home in almost all industrial applications.
This applies to both indoor and outdoor areas. The mobile consumers are usually force-guided via rails, but devices or machines that can move freely in the room can also be supplied with cable reels.
The general structure of the drums consists of drum body, drive and slip ring body. Within these three main groups, there are of course variants and gradations.
In the drum body, for example, we differentiate between spiral and cylindrical winding. There are further distinctions in the spiral area between monospiral, duospiral or even triple spiral winding. In cylindrical winding, we differentiate between so-called “wild” and “guided” winding. Guided winding is only possible with a winding device. In this case, the reel body is supported on both sides. Winding in several layers is state of the art for both variants.
The drive can be electric, hydraulic, pneumatic or spring-loaded. Chain transmissions with frames and pedestal bearings or shaft-mounted gearboxes are used as an intermediate link between the drum body and the drive. The corresponding ratios are determined using special calculation programs depending on the operating case. The travel speed plays a decisive role here.
The slip ring assembly is necessary to transfer the current or data from the rotating movement to the stationary part. Currents and voltages from the milliampere range up to 1000 amperes and from the millivolt range up to 30,000 volts must be safely insulated and transmitted without interference.
A cable reel is used to wind and unwind flexible power and data cables in an orderly manner. They can be wound and unwound in a horizontal or vertical position.
Depending on the travel speed and the cable used, it may be necessary to control the cable reel. The control system uses appropriate additional mechanical devices to prevent the cables from being loaded beyond the permissible tensile load approved by the cable manufacturer.
Appropriate additional equipment such as switches for end position limiters, deflectors with safety cut-outs, feed-in converters with and without strain relief and cable holding devices complete a cable reel.
The cable reel is used in a wide range of applications. Classic applications include the entire crane construction sector, including hoist technology, as well as the broad field of general logistics and conveyor technology. The theater sector, battery charging technology, environmental technology, façade access and all types of transport and transfer trolleys are other preferred areas of application.
