Spring balancers

also known as a retriever

A spring balancer can also be colloquially referred to as a retractor and is almost indispensable for the design of ergonomic workstations. Spring balancers support the design of safe, tidy and ultimately more effective industrial workstations. Depending on the design, they are suitable for lifting loads or tools weighing up to 14 kg.

The cable movement of the spring balancer is realized by spirally shaped cable drums and spiral springs. Thanks to the spiral spring, each retractor has a constant pulling force. In the case of a spring balancer without a locking function, the suspended tool is automatically retracted to its original position after use. In contrast to conventional spring balancers, the locking function makes it possible to position the suspended tool at a fixed height.

For the Ex area

For workplaces that must be equipped with explosion-protected equipment in accordance with the ATEX directive, we offer balancers in EX design. However, balancers and spring balancers differ in their handling! It is therefore better to contact our service department for advice: 040- 870 859 78 - 0

Spring balancer structure:

The design is characterized by the fact that a steel cable is usually wound on a spiral drum. This drum is connected to a spiral spring in a housing. Depending on the manufacturer, the housing can be made of plastic, aluminum, sheet steel or die-cast aluminum. A load hook, usually in the form of a snap hook, is located at the end of the steel cable to be pulled off. Furthermore, all retrievers are usually equipped with an adjustable rope retraction limiter in the form of a rubber stop.

Handling a spring balancer:

Spring balancers can carry loads of up to 14 kg. Depending on the series and type, each spring balancer covers a weight range of approx. 1 to 2 kg, which can be adjusted for the respective load. The respective load range is defined by an upper and lower limit. Spring balancers can usually be fitted with ropes that are up to 3 m long. Due to the spring design and the size of the housing of a spring balancer, it is generally not possible to wind longer ropes. A spring balancer should be selected for its application in such a way that the spring force is sufficient to wind up the suspended load using only the spring force. When selecting the retractor, the load capacity and the required rope extension length should be taken into account.

Please note the following for the correct design of the spring balancer:

The weight to be suspended, including possible supply lines, must be precisely determined to ensure optimum function. It is also crucial to precisely define the required cable length (from the suspension point of the spring balancer to the working area). The cable lengths of the spring balancers vary between 1,300 and 3,000 mm, depending on the model. Some models can also be supplied with an optional locking device. The locking mechanism only engages when the working load is slowly retracted. The automatic lock can be released by pulling back quickly. The housing of the spring balancers can be made of impact-resistant plastic or cast aluminum.

Spring balancers have been specially developed for pneumatic tools which, in addition to a steel cable, are also equipped with a compressed air spiral hose that winds around the steel cable.

Spring balancers and balancers

Retrievers and balancers are very similar in the way they are used. Tools for workstation design are suspended in both devices. However, spring balancers cover loads of up to 14 kg, whereas balancers can handle loads of up to 200 kg, depending on the design. The key design difference between a spring balancer and a balancer lies in the design of the cable drum. Whereas with a retractor the drum has a spiral winding and the rope is wound up layer by layer, the rope drum of a balancer is conically shaped, which results in optimum weight compensation.
